I'm on the Road in Utah

I am looking forward to hitting the road in August to visit a chain of markets that are newly carrying my cookbook, Delightfully Free. I'll be visiting all four of the Real Foods Markets based in Utah!  I appreciate the company's observation concerning the state of prepared and processed foods. A quote from their website reads: "The processing of food...today destroys most of the nutrient value of the original food. Most processed foods could be labeled 'nutrient free' and it would not be too far from the truth!" Exactly!! One of the chief goals of my book Delightfully Free, is not only to offer delicious quiches, entrees, soups, salads, muffins, cookies, pies and cakes that are gluten, diary and refined sugar-free, but to create them using whole foods as ingredients, resulting in wholesome food with nutrients still intact. What a concept...fabulously delicious recipes, still containing an abundance of nutrient value!

Delightfully Free came to be carried by Real Foods Markets as a result of meeting an amazing young woman at the Celiac Disease Foundation National Convention this year in Pasadena, California. I met Chandice Probst, gluten-free warrior and director of the Gluten-Free Calendar. We became fast friends. Chandice also has a very popular website and blog, Gluten-Free Frenzy. She was kind enough to review my book on her website and apparently her mother, Tana, had a chance to see the book and taste some of the recipes. Tana, who is the buyer for Real Foods Markets, so liked what she saw and tasted that my cookbooks are now featured in all of their stores. I could not be more pleased to have Delightfully Free in the scenic and friendly state of Utah, and especially in a market that promotes exactly what its name stands for, Real Foods!

We have scheduled book signings at all 3 of their current locations and, if their brand new Salt Lake City store opens in time, we'll make it 4!  I really hope that the SLC store opens in time. Fingers crossed.

Here's the schedule so far. On August 20th, 2013, I will be signing books at the Real Foods Market in St. George, Utah from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm.

On August 31st from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, I will be at the Real Foods Market in Heber City, Utah, which is South of Salt Lake City.

After visiting the Heber City store, I will go the same day to the Real Foods Market in Orem, Utah where I will be from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

"Solving the Gluten Mystery" with Dr. Julie Harden and Book Signing by Yours Truly

Every where you go it seems, more people are talking about needing to be gluten free and in many cases, choosing to be gluten free. In the last 5 years, the words "gluten free" have become a familiar marking on packages of crackers, pasta, cookies...Whole sections of traditional markets are devoted to "gluten free". We can now go out to eat and in a growing number of eateries, we can choose from gluten free selections on the menu to entire gluten free restaurants!! It is a huge advance from the days 11 years ago, when I and my family began our gluten free adventure!

So often I am asked "Why is gluten so bad for us?" "Is it bad for everyone?" "What changed? People have been eating wheat and gluten for centuries. Why has it become such a problem in recent years?

A few months ago I was privileged to hear Dr. Julie Kahn Harden give her lecture on "Solving the Gluten Mystery". I was so impressed that I told her I must come back with pen and paper when you share this talk again! Dr. Julie covered so much enlightening, helpful information that has been scientifically documented by studies focused on the transition of gluten over recent years and the effects of it on our bodies. She did so in a clear, easy to follow style and with warmth and a desire to help people achieve better health.

So I want to share that she will be presenting her talk again at Mother's Market in Costa Mesa, California on Tuesday, August 13th, at 6:30 P.M. I will be there also from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM signing copies of my cookbook. You can reserve a seat by calling 800-595-6667.

Dr. Hardin is a board certified naturopath and a licensed acupuncturist. In addition, to being a Certified Gluten Practitioner, she has advanced training in menopause, thyroid disorders, nutrition, weight loss, herbal medicine, natural fertility management, detoxification, environmental medicine, women's health, bioidentical hormone therapies and functional endocrinology. She practices at the Institute for Progressive Medicine in Irvine, California.

Dr. Hardin received her doctoral degree in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington.

Because I visited Bastyr's beautiful campus just last month, I can tell you that Kenmore is just North East of Seattle. I can also proudly say that my book, Delightfully Free, is now being carried in Bastyr's  bookstore.

And speaking just briefly about where Delightfully Free is being carried, I'm pleased to mention that Dr. Harden completed her residency in family medicine at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, where you can also find my cookbook sold in their bookstore.

I also should mention that you can find Delightfully Free at any of the Mother's Markets in Southern California. If you are local to Southern California and haven't been to the Mother's Market in Costa Mesa, on Tuesday, August 13th, you can enjoy a great talk and see a fantastic store as well. It even has a cafe & deli if you wanted to beat the traffic and come early to have dinner and shop or browse.

Mother's Market on a rare day with light traffic!

Maybe I'll see you there!

Autism Conference this Weekend in Pasadena, California

This weekend, August 10 & 11, is the 8th Annual "Back to School & More" Autism/Asperger's Conference at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, CA.

The weekend will include speakers and exhibitors. The two keynote speakers are both very accomplished! Dr. Ernsperger speaks on Saturday and will be focusing on building skills for working with Autism Spectrum individuals. You may be familiar, as I am, with Sunday's keynote speaker, Temple Grandin, from the recent film about her life. Temple has been a pioneer in achieving success as an individual with autism. She will be speaking about her own personal experience growing up with Asperger's.

I will be at this conference selling and signing my book, Delightfully Free.

There will be designated times for speakers and for touring the exhibition hall, so no one needs to miss a thing. The conference runs from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM both days.
